???? The Power of Persistence: Overcoming Self-Sabotage and Achieving Lasting Weight Loss Success

Making a strong decision to persist toward your goals is one of the most important factors determining success or failure. Obstacles are guaranteed to appear along the way — but those who push through every challenge eventually reach their goals.

I’ve had many setbacks and slips on my journey to losing and keeping off over 30 pounds, but quitting was never an option. Each time, I learned, adjusted, and moved closer to my vision of being as healthy, energetic, and fit as possible.

???? CIOT — Continuous Improvement Over Time

I use a principle I coined called CIOT: Continuous Improvement Over Time.
CIOT is the opposite of AON (All or Nothing).

Instead of shame or guilt after a slip, you learn, adapt, and continue moving forward. CIOT is the only path to lasting success — in weight loss and in life.

This mindset shift transforms failure into feedback. Every challenge becomes an opportunity to grow stronger, smarter, and more resilient.

???? Understanding Self-Sabotage

Can your subconscious mind try to self-sabotage your goals? Absolutely.

Self-sabotage happens when negative thoughts creep in and lead to discouraging actions — skipping workouts, overeating, or giving up when results stall. These thoughts are designed to keep you “safe,” comfortable, and unchanged — but they also keep you stuck.

Common self-sabotaging thoughts include:
• “This isn’t working; I may as well eat what I want.”
• “I’ve already slipped, I’ll start again Monday.”
• “I can’t lose weight; I’m too old, too busy, or have bad genes.”

These thoughts are not facts — they’re simply old mental habits trying to pull you back into your comfort zone.

???? Replace Self-Sabotage with Cause-and-Effect Thinking

When progress stalls, resist the urge to give up. Instead, ask:
• What might have changed this week?
• Did I eat out more? Drink more alcohol? Journal less?
• Did my meal planning or prep slip?

Once you identify the cause, make small adjustments and keep going. The key isn’t perfection — it’s awareness and course correction.

????️ One Slip Doesn’t Define You

If you overeat or make a less-healthy choice, get right back on track at the next meal.
Success isn’t about never slipping — it’s about how quickly you recover.

One choice won’t break your progress, but quitting will.

???? Why We Self-Sabotage

Our brains are wired for safety and survival. Thousands of years ago, conserving energy and eating high-calorie foods increased our chances of surviving famine.

Today, those same instincts can make weight loss feel “unsafe” — even though it’s one of the best things you can do for your health.

Recognize these outdated instincts and override them with your goals. When self-defeating thoughts appear, ignore them and take the opposite action — prep your meals, go for your walk, log your food, and keep moving forward.

???? The Take-Home Message

Recognize self-sabotaging thoughts.
Ignore them.
Look at cause and effect.
Adjust.
And keep moving forward.

Remember: progress is built through persistence and CIOT — Continuous Improvement Over Time.

Have a healthy Saturday!
