Are all sugars created equal? Are eating fruits the same as eating processed sugars such as refined white or brown sugar? Some diet books would have you believe so.
Should we limit or avoid processed or added sugars to lose weight and maximize our health? Absolutely. Processed sugars such as white sugar, brown sugar, raw sugar, cane sugar, granulated sugar, liquid cane juice, confectioners sugar, turbinado sugar among others should be limited as much as possible for health and weight loss.
Why? Sugars are highly processed, devoid of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients and can contribute to weight gain. Sugar is usually combined with fats and/or refined flours to create all the different high calorie deserts such as cakes, cookies, pastries, ice cream, gelato, frozen yogurt, among others and also found in muffins, granola bars, and a variety of other processed foods.
Refined sugars also stimulates the release of dopamine, a pleasure chemical, that encourages us to consume more calories beyond feelings of fullness leading to weight gain. Some find processed sugar addictive.
Bottom line? Skip refined/processed sugar to lose weight, feel great and improve your health!
How about fruit sugar? Is that the same as refined sugar? Fruits do contain simple sugars, but these sugars are wrapped in water, fiber, and come packaged with a variety of vitamins, minerals, anti oxidants and other nutrients making fruit a whole, unprocessed food. Fruits are low in calories, high in nutrients and water, and don’t lead to weight gain, but rather are part of a complete weight loss nutrition program. Aim for 2-4 fruits per day, and more can be consumed in a health and weight loss program if desired.
Take home? Skip refined sugars and stick to fruit instead as often as possible.
