The Power of Persistence: Why persistence is the key to success to losing weight?
Discover how persistence, commitment, and mindset can transform your weight loss journey. Learn 5 key steps to stay consistent and overcome setbacks — from The Weight Loss Dietitian, Kevin Grodnitzky, MS, RDN.
When it comes to lasting weight loss, the secret isn’t perfection — it’s persistence. Anyone can start strong, but the people who achieve real, sustainable success are the ones who decide to keep going no matter what life throws at them.
Here’s how to build the mindset that leads to lasting results.
???? Step 1: Set Your Goals and Motivators
Do you have your goals and motivators set? If so, now it’s time to make a firm decision to commit to them.
Making a clear decision and fully committing to your goals is one of the most important steps in losing weight — and keeping it off. Once you commit, something powerful happens: you begin to think more creatively and stay open to new ideas that help you succeed.
Decision-making is a powerful tool. Deciding that you will stay persistent — and continue moving forward no matter what obstacles arise — may be the single most important decision you make in your entire health and weight loss journey.
⚠️ Step 2: Recognize Your Potential Quitting Points
We all have moments that can derail our progress: stress, holidays, travel, medical issues, or self-doubt. But the key is simple — don’t stop.
Many people have a subconscious “quitting point,” such as “I’ll keep going unless this or that happens.” Take time to recognize what your quitting points have been in the past and make a conscious decision not to give in to them in the future.
Every time you push through those moments, you strengthen your consistency muscle — and that’s what ultimately leads to results.
???? Step 3: Learn from Success Stories (and Setbacks)
My most successful weight loss clients all share one thing in common: they never quit.
???? Example: One client lost over 60 pounds by staying consistent through travel, holidays, and life challenges. Their persistence paid off — they were even able to discontinue blood pressure medication thanks to their weight loss and lifestyle changes.
On the other hand, I’ve seen clients doing great who faced difficult life circumstances — like surgery or caring for a loved one — and stopped their healthy habits. Once they quit, the weight slowly came back.
The lesson is simple: it’s not the challenge that determines your success — it’s how you respond to it.
???? Step 4: Think Through the Consequences of Quitting
When life gets tough, ask yourself:
“If I quit now, will this make things better or worse?”
Even in stressful times, eating healthfully helps you manage challenges with more energy, focus, and resilience. If you stop taking care of yourself, you only add another problem to the mix.
I often remind myself:
“No matter what’s going on in my life, I want to eat as healthy as possible to handle anything that comes my way.”
That mindset shift can change everything.
???? Step 5: Adopt a “No-Quit” Mindset
I’ve faced many obstacles, slips, and challenges on my own weight loss journey. My most powerful tool? A no-quit mindset.
If I slip, I don’t dwell on it. I learn from it — and get right back on track at the very next meal or snack. Every experience, whether a success or a setback, becomes part of the learning process.
There’s no other option. Progress isn’t about being perfect — it’s about never giving up.
???? The Bottom Line
Set your health and weight loss goals.
Decide to never quit — no matter what.
That decision alone could be one of the most powerful and life-changing choices you ever make.
Stay persistent, stay consistent, and you’ll be amazed at what’s possible.
