What are the basic labs to get to learn more about our health?

What lab tests to get annually? On average, most individuals will get the following:

CMP- comprehensive metabolic panel- this tests liver and kidney function, electrolytes (such as sodium, potassium among others), glucose, and protein
CBC- complete blood count and includes red and white blood cells (immune function), platelets (a measure of clotting function in the blood)
Hb A1C- a test of blood glucose over 2-3 months
Lipid panel- tests cholesterol (HDL, LDL, VLDL) and triglycerides (fat in blood stream)
Thyroid Panel- includes thyroid stimulating hormone, T3 and T4 (thyroid hormones)
Vitamin D
Vitamin B12

These are the basics, however many other tests may be ordered including:
CRP- c reactive protein (a test of inflammation)
Homocysteine- a marker for heart disease risk or deficiencies in b12, b12 or b6
C peptide- a test of insulin production
Fasting insulin- a test of insulin sensitivity
Apo b- a test similar to cholesterol, but another heart disease risk test
Ferritin- a measure of stored iron

Certainly, a variety of other tests can be checked as well (including other vitamins, minerals and other compounds), but these cover most of the basics plus a few others.

Have a healthy day!
