What Is the “Pick 5” Strategy (And Why It Works for Weight Loss)

When it comes to losing weight and keeping it off, simplicity wins. One of the most effective approaches I’ve used with clients is something I call the “Pick 5” strategy—a simple, sustainable way to take the stress out of meal planning, reduce decision fatigue, and build long-term healthy habits.

What Is Pick 5?

Pick 5 is the idea of choosing five healthy meals that make up about 80–90% of what you eat each week.

  • You’ll have 1–2 breakfasts, 1–2 lunches, and 1–2 dinner options that become your go-to meals.

  • These meals keep you on track, simplify your routine, and save you time.

  • You can flex the 5 by swapping out ingredients for variety, or add/remove meals from your Pick 5 list as needed.

Some of my most successful clients use this approach to make healthy eating nearly automatic—because when the process is easier, results come faster.

Why Pick 5 Works

  • Simplicity = success. The fewer decisions you have to make, the easier it is to stick with healthy habits.

  • Perfect for routines. If you like habit and structure, your Pick 5 can form the backbone of your week.

  • Still works if you love variety. Even if you prefer more options, having 5 “go-to” meals on hand means you always have a healthy backup when life gets busy.

  • Flexible. You can expand to a Pick 7 or Pick 10 if you want more variety—or narrow it down to a Pick 3 for ultimate simplicity.

How to Start Your Pick 5

  1. Choose your top 5 meals. Start with healthy favorites you already enjoy.

  2. Make them balanced. Aim for at least 50% fruits and/or vegetables in each meal.

  3. Upgrade ingredients. Swap less healthy items (like heavy sauces, fried foods, or processed meats) for lean proteins, veggies, and fruits.

  4. Keep it whole. Focus on whole, minimally processed foods that give you more volume and nutrients for fewer calories.

  5. Repeat often. The more you practice, the easier it becomes.

The Bottom Line

The Pick 5 strategy simplifies the process of getting healthy food in front of you when you’re hungry. By streamlining your meals into a small set of simple, nourishing options, you reduce the stress of decision-making, save time, and make success much more likely.

It’s not about perfection—it’s about creating a routine that works for you, is easy to follow, and can help you lose weight and keep it off for life.

Have a healthy day!
